Life Is a Dream, released on 21 August, brings together 12 orchestral works written by Sir Anthony Hopkins across more than six decades. The recordings are performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra under conductor Gustavo Dudamel, with contributions from pianist Sergio Tiempo, cellist Gregorio Nieto, The Bach Choir and the boy choristers of Winchester Cathedral.

The chart result is an unusual addition to a career already defined by some of the most recognisable performances in modern cinema. Hopkins is a two-time Academy Award winner, but music predates much of his acting success. He began playing piano as a child and has continued composing privately throughout his life.

A lifetime of music reaches number one

The album is rooted particularly strongly in Hopkins’s memories of Wales. Born in Port Talbot, he has described music as his first creative ambition, and several of the compositions draw directly on childhood, family and landscape.

Among them is Bracken Road, part of 1947: Suite for Solo Piano and Orchestra, inspired by memories of Margam. Other pieces explore family relationships and Hopkins’s long-standing affection for the classical tradition rather than attempting to turn his screen fame into a conventional celebrity crossover record.

The record is not an actor singing familiar standards or revisiting songs associated with a film career; it presents Hopkins as a composer, with music developed quietly alongside his better-known work.

Decca president Laura Monks described the project as reflecting a lifetime of passion and work, congratulating Hopkins on the recognition of his work as both a composer and supporter of classical music.

Gustavo Dudamel and the Philharmonia bring the pieces to life

The scale of the recording is significant. Sessions took place at Alexandra Palace in London in April, with Dudamel conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra. Hopkins’s music is therefore presented through one of Britain’s leading orchestras and one of the most prominent conductors working internationally.

Hopkins has previously written music for film and had compositions performed publicly, but Life Is a Dream gathers that creative life into a single major-label album. In an Associated Press interview ahead of its release, he described music as his first love and spoke about the greater sense of freedom he finds in composition compared with the discipline of acting.

The album title comes from Pedro Calderón de la Barca’s play Life Is a Dream, while the collection itself moves through different periods of Hopkins’s life. Rather than being newly written as a single project, its material spans decades, giving the record something closer to a musical autobiography.

A distinctly British chart achievement

The Official UK Classical Chart measures albums making an impact through UK sales and streaming, focusing on classical releases from the previous 12 months. Reaching number one places Hopkins’s work at the top of that specialist national ranking just a week after the album’s release.

For UK audiences, there is another layer to the story. The music repeatedly returns to Wales, while the performances were recorded in London by British ensembles. It is a project shaped by Hopkins’s international career but grounded in the places and memories that preceded it.

At 88, Hopkins has reached a chart summit in an art form he has pursued largely away from the attention surrounding his acting. Life Is a Dream does not represent a sudden change of direction so much as the public arrival of a creative life that has been running in parallel for decades.

After two Oscars and generations of memorable screen roles, a number one classical album is an unexpected new chapter — but, given how long Hopkins has been writing music, not a new passion at all.
