BBC Three to Leave Broadcast TV Again as Programmes Move Online

BBC Three to Leave Broadcast TV Again as Programmes Move Online

BBC Three will stop broadcasting as a television channel in spring 2027, with its commissions continuing on BBC iPlayer and other digital platforms. The change, announced on Tuesday 20 October, will also see the closure of the BBC Scotland television channel and Radio 4 Extra’s linear service.

The decision is part of the corporation’s programme to save £500 million by 2028. For audiences, it means another change in how BBC programmes are distributed, with familiar channel names and content increasingly separated from a traditional television schedule.

What the BBC Three change means for viewers

According to Broadband TV News’s report on the announcement, BBC Three commissions will be available through iPlayer and platforms including YouTube. The BBC says the move will be supported by increased investment in content for younger audiences.

The end of the broadcast channel therefore does not, by itself, mean the BBC Three brand or all its programmes will disappear. It changes where viewers will find that output. Audiences who currently follow an evening’s scheduled programmes will instead need to look to the relevant digital service.

BBC Three has made this transition before. It became an online-only service in February 2016, before returning as a broadcast channel in February 2022. The newly announced closure will take it off linear television again roughly five years after that return.

A channel with a distinctive entertainment history

BBC Three’s identity has long been tied to programmes aimed at younger adults. BBC reporting reproduced by MyJoyOnline highlights Fleabag, Normal People and Gavin & Stacey among its best-known successes.

That history helps explain why a distribution decision matters beyond a channel number. A recognisable home can connect audiences with comedy, drama and factual programmes they might not otherwise seek out. The next phase will depend on how clearly those programmes are presented and promoted online.

There is also an important distinction between the closure of a channel and the future of individual series. The announcement concerns broadcast services. It should not be read as a blanket renewal or cancellation decision for every programme associated with those services.

What changes in Scotland and on radio?

BBC Scotland will continue as a channel on iPlayer, with content also available on BBC One and BBC Two in Scotland. However, Reporting Scotland: News at Seven will end when the linear channel closes, according to the BBC’s reporting.

Some Radio 4 Extra programmes will remain available on BBC Sounds. The Daily Service will be carried on Sounds and local radio. That is particularly relevant to listeners who use a radio set to discover archive comedy and drama, rather than choosing individual programmes through an app.

The wider changes also include around 100 roles at BBC News, as Sky News reported on Tuesday. These sit within a broader savings programme rather than being a measure of the cost of closing BBC Three alone.

Performers seek clarity over digital payments

In its response to the closures, performers’ union Equity said its agreements cover usage rights and fees across online and linear television. It also said it had received assurances that commissioning would not decrease as a result of the BBC Three and BBC Scotland moves.

The union nevertheless wants clarity about payments when material is repeated on YouTube. It has separately warned that reducing Radio 4 Extra’s archive broadcasts could reduce performers’ repeat income.

For now, the announced timetable is spring 2027. Viewers and listeners can continue using the existing services while awaiting more detailed information about the transition and where particular programmes will be available.

The practical question for households is how easily they can find the content they value after the move. For performers, the focus is whether new distribution arrangements preserve commissioning opportunities and fairly reward the continued use of their work.
