Beyoncé Scores Her Fastest Adult R&B No. 1 With Morning Dew (Donk)

Beyoncé Morning Dew (Donk) number one is the latest chart milestone for one of pop and R&B’s most enduring stars, with the track reaching the top of Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart in its sixth week.

The single rises from number three to number one on the chart dated 12 September, reflecting radio activity across the United States during the tracking week from 28 August to 3 September. According to Billboard’s reporting based on Luminate data, that makes “Morning Dew (Donk)” Beyoncé’s fourth solo leader on Adult R&B Airplay.

It is also her quickest journey to the summit on that particular chart. Her previous fastest Adult R&B Airplay number one, the 2022 Isley Brothers collaboration “Make Me Say It Again Girl”, took seven weeks to reach the top.

A new chapter for a song with a long history

“Morning Dew (Donk)” was officially released on 4 July through Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records. Parkwood confirmed at the time that Beyoncé wrote the song with Pharrell Williams, The-Dream and Darius Dixon, with production by Beyoncé and Williams.

The release was presented as the beginning of a 60-day countdown to the 20th anniversary of B’Day, Beyoncé’s second solo studio album. The anniversary edition arrived on 4 September, exactly two decades after the album’s original worldwide release and on Beyoncé’s 45th birthday.

That timing gives the new chart achievement an unusually neat connection between Beyoncé’s past and present. Rather than simply returning an older single to the spotlight, the anniversary campaign has introduced a formally released song into her current catalogue and given it a life of its own at radio.

Her fourth Adult R&B Airplay leader

Beyoncé first topped Adult R&B Airplay with “Love on Top”, which spent seven weeks at number one in 2012. A decade later, “Break My Soul” led for two weeks, while her collaboration with Ronald Isley and The Isley Brothers, “Make Me Say It Again Girl”, spent five weeks at the summit.

“Morning Dew (Donk)” therefore becomes her fourth number one on the format and her tenth solo top-ten entry there. Billboard also reports that it is Beyoncé’s 32nd solo career entry on Adult R&B Airplay.

The track is gaining ground elsewhere too. In the same reporting week it moved to number seven on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and number three on the broader R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. The latter combines audience figures from adult and mainstream R&B/hip-hop stations, where the song reached 13.8 million audience impressions during the tracking period.

A major anniversary for B’Day

The original B’Day arrived in 2006 as the follow-up to Beyoncé’s debut solo album Dangerously in Love. Parkwood notes that it became her second number-one album in the United States, while its singles went on to include some of the most recognisable songs from the first phase of her solo career.

Twenty years later, “Morning Dew (Donk)” gives the anniversary more than a nostalgic dimension. Its radio performance means the campaign is producing a current chart story rather than simply revisiting an established catalogue.

The anniversary also arrives at a point when Beyoncé’s catalogue is being heard across several generations of listeners. The original B’Day era produced songs including “Déjà Vu”, “Ring the Alarm” and “Irreplaceable”, while “Morning Dew (Donk)” now places a newly issued recording alongside that material. The result is an anniversary project with an active contemporary single rather than one relying solely on familiar hits, giving radio programmers and listeners something new to engage with while the original album returns to attention.

For Beyoncé, whose recent work has repeatedly moved between pop, dance, R&B and country traditions, the achievement is also a reminder of the continuing relationship between her music and R&B radio.
