From Weekend Idea to 1,800 Businesses: The Story Behind Kent Small Business

What began as a simple conversation between Lucy and Joe has quickly become one of Kent’s fastest-growing online communities for independent businesses. During a visit to GlitterBeam’s Auravine Studio, the couple shared how a side project built over a single weekend has grown into a directory featuring more than 1,800 local businesses, all with one mission: making it easier to discover and support the people behind Kent’s small business community.
If you’ve ever searched social media for a trusted local tradesperson or independent shop, you’ll know the frustration. Someone asks for a recommendation, dozens of comments appear, and by the time you need that information again, the post has disappeared.
That everyday problem became the spark for Kent Small Business.
“We wanted somewhere that genuinely helped small businesses get discovered,” Lucy explained. Rather than competing with major advertising platforms, the aim was to give independent businesses, particularly those without large marketing budgets, a place where customers could easily find them.
What neither of them expected was the response.
A project that exploded overnight
The couple originally imagined around 30 businesses might register during the first week.
Instead, before the website had even been completed, more than 100 businesses had signed up on the very first evening after they announced the idea on Facebook. By the following day, that number had reached around 600, leaving them racing to build the platform while interest continued to soar.
“We hadn’t even finished making the website,” Joe laughed during the interview.
Both work full time and are raising two children, meaning the website quickly became an evening project that regularly kept them working until two o’clock in the morning.
More than just a business directory
Although Kent Small Business began life as an online directory, it has rapidly developed into something much broader.
Businesses can create profiles, upload special offers, and connect directly with customers looking to shop locally. The offers section itself was a last-minute addition during development, but has since become one of the platform’s most popular features, with hundreds of local discounts already available.
The philosophy is simple.
Support local people.
Support independent businesses.
Keep money circulating within Kent’s communities.
As Lucy pointed out, many shoppers assume they’ll always find the best prices with national retailers, but local businesses often provide better value while delivering a far more personal service.
Behind the scenes, the workload is split naturally.
Joe, a professional software developer, built every line of code powering the website, databases and infrastructure.
Lucy became the public face of the project, managing social media, answering hundreds of emails and manually reviewing every single business submitted to the directory.
That has meant personally checking more than 1,800 listings.
It’s a huge commitment, but one they believe is essential to maintaining the quality of the platform while keeping it welcoming for both businesses and customers.
The pressure of unexpected success
Ironically, previous projects the pair had spent months researching never gained much traction.
This one, built almost on impulse over a weekend, became an instant success.
That rapid growth has brought its own challenges.
As more businesses joined, expectations increased. Every suggestion for a new category, every feature request and every improvement became another item on an ever-growing development list.
“We feel a responsibility to make it as good as it can be,” Joe admitted.
Big plans for the future
Despite already attracting thousands of users, Lucy and Joe see the current website as just the beginning.
Among the ideas they’re hoping to introduce are:
- dedicated pages for every town across Kent
- local events and hidden gems
- improved recommendations
- verified business listings
- a mobile app
- and perhaps most excitingly, the Kent Small Business Awards, celebrating the county’s independent businesses while bringing owners together for networking and recognition.
The vision extends well beyond creating another online directory.
It’s about building a genuine community.
A reminder to shop local
Throughout the interview, one message came across repeatedly.
Adding businesses to the website is only half the job.
The real difference comes when people actively choose to use local companies, discover independent retailers and support family-run businesses instead of automatically turning to major national chains.
With more than 1,800 businesses already listed — and new ones joining every day — Kent Small Business is proving just how vibrant the county’s independent business community really is.
For Lucy and Joe, what started as a simple weekend idea has become something much bigger than they ever imagined.
And judging by its remarkable growth, the story is only just beginning.
