Kacey Musgraves Announces Tex Mex Tapes and Releases Two New Songs

Kacey Musgraves has announced Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes, a 16-track companion album arriving on 15 January 2027, and released two songs to introduce it.

“Weekend In Texas” and “Mi Tesoro” arrived on Friday 23 October, giving listeners an immediate entry point into a project that explores the musical relationship between Texas and Mexico.

The collection will be released through Lost Highway Records. It contains 11 originals and five covers, with four songs performed entirely in Spanish, according to Universal Music’s official announcement.

Kacey Musgraves shares two songs from Tex Mex Tapes

The opening releases bring together new songwriting and an established song from a different musical tradition. “Weekend In Texas” was written by Musgraves with Shane McAnally and Ilsey Huber, while “Mi Tesoro” is her version of a Norteño classic.

iHeartCountry identifies Pedro Reyna Cisneros as the writer of “Mi Tesoro” and reports that Musgraves highlighted Ramón Ayala’s association with the song when introducing her recording.

Releasing those tracks together makes the balance of the album easier to understand. There is newly written material alongside songs with their own existing histories, rather than a collection built entirely around revisiting familiar Musgraves recordings.

It also gives listeners two distinct routes into the January release. One starts with her current songwriting partnerships; the other connects her voice to music that has already travelled through generations of listeners.

A Spanish version of Uncertain, TX

Another key inclusion is a newly recorded Spanish-language version of “Uncertain, TX”, featuring Intocable. It revisits a song previously recorded with Willie Nelson, with a different collaboration at the centre of the performance.

Goldmine places the Intocable recording within the album’s wider exploration of music from the Texas-Mexico border. The collection also includes “(Hey Baby) Qué Pasó?” and “Before The Next Teardrop Falls”.

A live recording adds another setting to the project. “Tú Solo Tú” features Mariachi Oro De América and was captured in Mexico City, bringing a concert performance into an album that otherwise combines new songs and reinterpretations.

Those choices give the subtitle a clear purpose. Tex Mex Tapes names the musical connections being explored, while the Middle of Nowhere title keeps it attached to the world of her most recent album.

The title also distinguishes this collection from a routine expanded edition. With 11 originals among its 16 tracks, it offers a substantial body of additional songwriting, while the covers and live recording make room for the artists and traditions surrounding that work.

A companion to Middle of Nowhere

Middle of Nowhere arrived in May, and the new collection extends that album’s interest in place, solitude and the sounds associated with Texas. Country, bluegrass, pop and Norteño influences were already part of the earlier record’s musical framework.

MusicRow reports that the announcement comes as Musgraves approaches the final Seattle shows of her current North American tour, scheduled for 26 and 27 October.

The release also arrives before November’s CMA Awards, where her nominations include Album of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year. Those events sit around a campaign that is continuing beyond the first album’s release, rather than ending with the current tour dates.

For listeners in the UK, the immediate news is the music already available: “Weekend In Texas” and “Mi Tesoro” can be heard now. The full Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes follows on 15 January 2027.
