BLACKPINK’s LISA Documentary Always Lalisa Is Coming to Cinemas Worldwide

LISA Always Lalisa documentary plans have expanded into a worldwide cinema release, with the BLACKPINK star’s feature film set to open in IMAX and other cinemas from 12 October 2026.

Sony Music Vision announced the theatrical plans on 2 September, confirming that Trafalgar Releasing will handle a limited global cinema engagement before the documentary moves exclusively to YouTube Premium later in the year. Tickets are due to go on sale on 9 September, with individual participating cinemas to be announced.

Directed by Sue Kim, Always Lalisa follows a pivotal period in LISA’s career: a year in which she stepped away from BLACKPINK’s group activities to pursue a more independent path through solo music, acting and her own business ventures.

The documentary’s central idea is less about retelling LISA’s entire career than observing what happened when one of the world’s most recognisable K-pop performers had to define herself outside the group that made her famous.

Sony’s official synopsis describes a period in which LISA faces the pressure of launching a solo career, pursuing acting and building a brand while also trying to maintain a personal life away from the spotlight. That gives the film a natural point of tension: independence came with opportunity, but also with the knowledge that her return to BLACKPINK was approaching.

The film includes her work around debut solo album Alter Ego, her acting debut in the third series of The White Lotus and preparations for her major solo appearance at Coachella in 2025.

Director Sue Kim previously made The Last of the Sea Women and The Speed Cubers. The new film is produced by Sony Music Vision with RCA Records, Tremolo Productions, Salt Water Productions and LLOUD CO.

A cinema release before YouTube Premium

Always Lalisa will first receive its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival before reaching general audiences. From 12 October, it will begin a limited engagement in IMAX and cinemas worldwide.

The wording is important for UK audiences. Sony has announced a worldwide theatrical release, but individual UK venues and screening times have not yet been published. Those details are expected as tickets go on sale from 9 September.

After the cinema run, the documentary will stream globally and exclusively on YouTube Premium later in 2026. An exact streaming date has not yet been confirmed.

The combination of event cinema and streaming is increasingly familiar for major music documentaries, but the IMAX component gives Always Lalisa a particularly large-scale first outing for a film centred on an artist’s transition into solo life.

LISA’s solo era has made an impact in the UK

The release also arrives after LISA has established a distinct chart identity away from BLACKPINK. Official Charts records her 2025 debut solo album Alter Ego reaching Number 20 on the UK Albums Chart.

Born Again, her collaboration with Doja Cat and RAYE, became her first solo UK Top 40 single, peaking at Number 13. BLACKPINK themselves remain major UK chart performers: 2022 album Born Pink made them the first K-pop girl group to top the Official Albums Chart.

That history gives the documentary obvious relevance beyond the group’s established fanbase. It is effectively a film about how a performer within one of pop’s biggest groups attempts to build an identity that can stand alongside it rather than simply underneath it.

What comes next for LISA?

The cinema announcement lands during another active period. Official Charts reports that new single SaWaDika arrives on 3 September, with LISA’s forthcoming EP Press Play scheduled for 23 October.

That means the documentary’s October cinema run will sit directly inside her next musical chapter rather than functioning as a retrospective after the fact.

For now, the confirmed picture is clear: the LISA Always Lalisa documentary reaches IMAX and cinemas worldwide from 12 October, tickets go on sale on 9 September, and YouTube Premium will become its exclusive streaming home later this year.
