National Album Day 2026 Celebrates Music Icons With More Than 85 Special Releases

National Album Day 2026 Celebrates Music Icons With More Than 85 Special Releases

National Album Day 2026 returns across the UK today, Saturday 17 October, with a celebration of the artists and records that have shaped popular music. The ninth edition of the annual event has chosen Icons as its theme, bringing together more than 85 special album releases and reissues alongside activity in record shops and on digital music services. The organisers have confirmed that the 2026 programme spans generations and genres, with recognisable names from British pop, soul, rock and electronic music.

George Michael, Robbie Williams and more return to vinyl

Among the headline releases is George Michael’s Listen Without Prejudice, originally released in 1990 and now offered in a special black-and-pink splatter vinyl edition. The record includes Praying for Time, Freedom! ’90 and Heal the Pain. Its National Album Day listing at Rough Trade confirms the format and 17 October release date, giving fans a distinctive physical version of one of his defining solo albums.

Robbie Williams is also part of the celebrations. His third studio album, Sing When You’re Winning, is being reissued as a limited-edition double LP on red and blue vinyl. The album brought together major hits including Rock DJ, Supreme and Kids, his duet with Kylie Minogue. According to Official Charts’ announcement of Williams as an Album Icon, the release marks the album’s first vinyl reissue and its first appearance on coloured vinyl.

From PinkPantheress to New Order

The selection deliberately reaches beyond one era. PinkPantheress’ debut mixtape To Hell With It is getting a collectible clear-vinyl edition, while Annie Lennox’s Bare, Sade’s Lovers Rock, Pulp’s Different Class and Aretha Franklin’s Aretha’s Gold are also included in the announced range. The official release catalogue places contemporary artists alongside established performers, giving listeners several routes into music they might not ordinarily encounter.

New Order’s Brotherhood is another notable addition. The group’s fourth studio album turns 40 this year, and a crystal-clear vinyl edition uses the 2024 remastered audio. The retail release details confirm that Bizarre Love Triangle appears on the album. Elsewhere, Emeli Sandé’s Our Version of Events has been prepared on gold vinyl, bringing a more recent British pop success into an event that also celebrates decades-old classics.

Stars champion the full-album experience

The event’s Album Champions reflect that breadth. PinkPantheress, Melanie C, Max Richter, Robbie Williams and The Damned have been named as supporters of the 2026 campaign. Their involvement puts the focus not simply on individual singles, but on albums as complete creative projects. National Album Day was launched in 2018 by music industry organisations the BPI and ERA, and its annual themes encourage listeners to discover entire records and revisit favourites rather than relying exclusively on individual tracks or playlists.

BBC Radio 2 is the official broadcast partner, with themed programmes also available through BBC Sounds. The event’s latest programme update details music selections across decades, including contributions from Gary Davies, Fearne Cotton and Dermot O’Leary. A special edition of the Sidetracked podcast with Nick Grimshaw and Annie Macmanus also explores Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors, widening the celebration beyond vinyl collecting.

How music fans can take part today

Record shops and online retailers around the country are participating, although the availability of particular editions will vary by retailer and stock. Listeners can consult the official events calendar for local activities and the organiser’s release listings for participating albums. There is no requirement to buy anything: choosing a favourite album, listening from start to finish, or sharing a record that means something personally is equally in keeping with the day’s purpose.

For UK music fans, the appeal of this year’s Icons theme is the combination of familiarity and discovery. A George Michael favourite can sit alongside a PinkPantheress release; a New Order classic can lead listeners towards another generation of performers. With new editions arriving today and broadcasters joining in, National Album Day offers an opportunity to give the album itself, rather than a single song, centre stage.
