Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan Unite for ‘expectations’ Remix and New Music Video

Two of pop’s biggest names are finally joining forces, with Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan teaming up for a new version of “expectations”.

The remix is being released through Interscope Records on Thursday 15 October, accompanied by an official music video starring both artists.

It marks a particularly significant moment for Chappell Roan, with the release confirmed as her first official featured appearance on another artist’s track.

Rodrigo first started teasing the collaboration with a studio clip featuring Roan’s voice before confirming that the pair had reworked “expectations”, a track from Rodrigo’s third studio album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.

The original album became a major commercial success following its release earlier this year, reaching number one in multiple countries and giving Rodrigo another huge chapter in a career that has already produced global hits including “drivers license”, “good 4 u” and “vampire”.

For the new version of “expectations”, Rodrigo and Roan have once again worked with producer Daniel Nigro, who has played an important role in both artists’ careers.

Nigro has been a longtime collaborator with Rodrigo and was also central to the music that helped transform Chappell Roan into one of contemporary pop’s biggest breakthrough stars.

A new ‘expectations’ music video is coming too

The release will not stop with the song.

A full music video featuring Rodrigo and Roan will arrive alongside the remix, directed by Bardia Zeinali.

Early promotional images show the pair leaning heavily into colourful, exaggerated pop styling, suggesting the visual will bring together Rodrigo’s latest era with the theatrical aesthetic that has become closely associated with Chappell Roan.

Physical editions are also planned, including limited-edition seven-inch vinyl, CD and cassette versions of the collaboration.

Chappell Roan and Olivia Rodrigo have a long musical connection

Although this is their first official release together as lead and featured artists, Rodrigo and Roan have been connected musically for years.

Roan previously supported Rodrigo on tour, while both artists have worked extensively with Nigro. Roan also performed at Rodrigo’s inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival in California this summer.

The women-led festival raised money for organisations supporting women and girls, while Roan has continued using her own growing platform to support LGBT+ causes.

Later this month, proceeds from Roan’s Super Graphic Spectacular and Super Graphic Block Party events are set to support The Midwest Princess Project, which provides resources for trans young people and LGBTQ+ communities.

Putting Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan on the same record brings together two artists who have helped define the current generation of mainstream pop.

For Roan, it is another major moment following the extraordinary growth of songs including “Pink Pony Club”, “HOT TO GO!”, “Good Luck, Babe!” and “The Subway”.

For Rodrigo, the remix gives “expectations” a new life following the success of her latest album and arrives as her latest world tour continues.

The “expectations” remix and its accompanying music video arrive on Thursday 15 October in the United States, with the release reaching UK listeners overnight into Friday.
