I Am Helen Trailer Reveals Nicola Coughlan and Joe Cole in Channel 4 Drama

I Am Helen Trailer Reveals Nicola Coughlan and Joe Cole in Channel 4 Drama

The I Am Helen trailer has been released, offering a first extended look at Nicola Coughlan and Joe Cole in Channel 4’s forthcoming two-part relationship drama. The preview, reported on Monday 26 October, introduces Helen and her boyfriend Steve as their five-year relationship comes under increasing strain.

Coughlan developed the story with film-maker Dominic Savage, who created the female-led I Am anthology. Channel 4 has confirmed two hour-long episodes, but a precise broadcast date has not yet been announced. The new trailer is a preview of the drama, rather than an announcement that it is available to watch in full.

What the I Am Helen trailer reveals

Radio Times’ report on the trailer describes a relationship approaching a breaking point, with Helen trying to discuss its problems while Steve becomes increasingly dismissive and controlling. The preview connects that deterioration with the influence of the manosphere.

The reported scenes include Steve receiving advice from a friend who presents men as unfairly blamed, alongside Helen confiding in someone about the emotional effect of their relationship. Aggressive voice messages and an outburst in which Steve punches a fridge make the threat more explicit. These are details from the promotional preview, rather than a complete account of how the story develops.

Channel 4’s official trailer gives viewers an introduction to the central pair. The focus is on the relationship itself, allowing a familiar domestic setting to become the place where wider ideas about power and gender are expressed.

Nicola Coughlan develops the story with Dominic Savage

In its official first-look announcement, Channel 4 explained that the drama examines womanhood in a world influenced by male power, aggression and control. The broadcaster describes the story as being told from a woman’s perspective, with an emphasis on the damage toxic masculinity can cause within modern relationships.

The collaboration follows the anthology’s established approach, in which Savage develops each story with its leading performer. Coughlan’s involvement therefore extends beyond playing Helen. Savage is credited as the creator, writer and director, with the story developed alongside her.

For audiences who know Coughlan through Derry Girls, Bridgerton or Big Mood, the project offers another leading role built around a different set of pressures. Cole’s previous credits include Gangs of London and A Small Light. Here, their performances are placed at the centre of one self-contained story.

Coughlan described joining the anthology as “an absolute honour” when the project was announced in July 2025. Her comments emphasised Savage’s commitment to exploring women’s experiences, placing the collaboration in a series whose identity depends on the perspective of each new leading performer.

Where I Am Helen fits in the anthology

The new instalment follows three earlier series of I Am. The first launched in August 2019 with Vicky McClure in I Am Nicola, Samantha Morton in I Am Kirsty and Gemma Chan in I Am Hannah. The second featured Suranne Jones, Letitia Wright and Lesley Manville in separate stories.

Kate Winslet later led I Am Ruth, which won two BAFTAs in 2023. Each instalment centres on a different woman, so the anthology’s continuity comes through its creative approach and focus on female experience rather than a single continuing group of characters.

Channel 4’s original commission announcement identifies Me+You Productions as the production company. Krishnendu Majumdar and Savage produce, with Richard Yee as executive producer and Gemma Boswell commissioning for Channel 4 Drama. Sky Studios co-funds the production, and NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution handles international sales.

The release of the trailer brings the new story into clearer view while leaving its outcome open. For now, the confirmed viewing information is that I Am Helen is coming to Channel 4 as a two-part drama. Further transmission details are still to follow.
