Primal Hatch Megalodon Review: Is the Viral Hatching Shark Worth £55?

f your social feeds have suddenly produced videos of a giant egg fizzing red before an enormous shark bursts out of it, this is probably what you have been looking at.

The Primal Hatch Megalodon is one of Spin Master’s big new toys for 2026, and there is a very obvious reason it has started spreading across TikTok. The first hatch is designed almost like a miniature horror-film scene.

You put the egg inside its tank, add water, the water begins fizzing and changing colour, glowing red eyes appear inside the shell, ominous noises start and eventually a 40.6cm Megalodon erupts from the egg with chomping jaws.

Spin Master says the toy has already accumulated more than four million TikTok views since appearing at New York Toy Fair.

But at around £55 in the UK, is there actually a good toy underneath the viral reveal?

What is the Primal Hatch Megalodon?

The Primal Hatch Megalodon is an interactive shark toy from Spin Master, the company behind brands including Bitzee, Hatchimals and PAW Patrol.

It follows the Primal Hatch Jurassic World T. Rex, but replaces the dinosaur with one of the most famous prehistoric ocean predators.

The package is effectively part unboxing experience and part reusable interactive toy.

Inside you get the large egg, the hatching tank and the Megalodon itself. Batteries are included, so the main thing needed to begin the experience is water.

Spin Master recommends it for children aged five and over.

What actually happens when it hatches?

This is clearly the part designed for TikTok.

The egg sits inside the supplied tank. Add water and the hatching sequence begins.

The water fizzes and turns red while lights and sounds suggest something is waking inside. The shark’s eyes glow through the egg before it eventually bursts from the shell.

And it is surprisingly big.

The Megalodon measures around 16 inches, or 40.6cm, once released. It has illuminated eyes and motorised chomping jaws, so it does not simply become a static plastic shark once the reveal finishes.

It is deliberately theatrical, and that is probably its biggest strength.

For a birthday or Christmas morning, there is considerably more spectacle here than simply opening a box and pulling out a toy.

Can you hatch the Primal Hatch Megalodon more than once?

Yes, and this is probably the most important detail.

The Primal Hatch Megalodon can be reset and hatched again.

There is an internal mechanism allowing the shark to compress back into its egg, while the egg and tank are designed for repeated use.

That immediately gives it an advantage over surprise toys where most of the entertainment disappears as soon as the packaging has been opened.

Spin Master specifically promotes the repeatable hatch as part of the product rather than treating the shark itself as the only toy.

Early owner feedback also suggests that children often want to reset the shark shortly after seeing the first hatch.

What does the shark do after hatching?

This is where Primal Hatch Megalodon needs to justify the £55 price.

The Megalodon has light-up eyes, chomping movement, sounds and a flexible body. It also has several interactive play modes rather than functioning purely as a reveal toy.

Spin Master’s early product information identifies three named modes: Savage Strike, Shark Shield and Raging Roar.

There are interactive elements involving the shark’s jaws and reactions, giving children something to do once the main hatching spectacle is finished.

That matters because the reveal itself is relatively brief. The question is whether the child receiving it likes sharks enough to continue treating the Megalodon as a toy rather than immediately wanting to hatch something else.

Why has Primal Hatch Megalodon gone viral?

Because it is almost engineered to be filmed.

A mysterious egg is already good social-media material. Add red foaming water, glowing eyes, noises and a large shark unexpectedly springing from the shell and you have a reaction-video machine.

Spin Master says Primal Hatch Megalodon passed four million TikTok views between its Toy Fair unveiling and its wider launch.

Tom’s Guide also singled it out during Toy Fair, describing it as an escalation of Spin Master’s earlier hatching T. Rex concept after seeing the Megalodon demonstration.

Unlike some viral toys, though, the concept is immediately understandable even if you have never seen the trend.

It is a shark that dramatically hatches from an egg. No explanation required.

Is there a downside?

There are three.

The first is price.

At around £55 in the UK, this sits firmly in main-present territory rather than inexpensive impulse-toy territory. Argos currently lists it at £55.

Second, much of its appeal rests on the hatching experience. If the child receiving it has little interest in sharks, interactive creatures or surprise toys, there are arguably more versatile toys available for the money.

Third, the mechanism is more complicated than an ordinary action figure.

Early customer feedback is generally positive, but there are also reports of occasional problems with eggs not opening properly or children having difficulty resetting some functions. A number of those early reviews were promotional samples, so they should not be treated as completely representative of long-term reliability.

That is the biggest reason we would favour buying from a mainstream retailer with a straightforward returns policy rather than paying inflated prices through an unknown marketplace seller.

Is it scary for younger children?

Potentially.

It is officially rated 5+, but parents should know what the toy is trying to do.

There are roaring noises, red lights, fizzing water, chomping jaws and an intentional surprise when the Megalodon bursts from its egg.

Some early parent reviews describe younger children becoming nervous during the hatch even though they enjoyed the toy afterwards.

For a five-year-old who adores sharks and monsters, that might be precisely the attraction.

For a child who dislikes sudden noises or jump scares, it could be a completely different experience.

Is the Primal Hatch Megalodon worth £55?

For the right child, we think it makes considerably more sense than many one-use surprise toys.

The reveal is genuinely unusual, the shark itself is substantial, and crucially, you can hatch it again.

That last point changes the value proposition considerably.

We would still hesitate at £55 for a child whose interest is primarily in opening surprise toys, because the novelty of the initial spectacle may fade.

For a shark-obsessed child, however, there is much more here. Once the hatch is finished, they are left with a large interactive Megalodon rather than a tiny collectible.

Think twice if: your child is easily frightened by sudden sounds, is likely to lose interest after the reveal, or you are looking for a smaller present.

The Primal Hatch Megalodon succeeds because the viral moment is not the entire product. The exploding egg gets people watching, but the reusable hatch and interactive shark give it a better chance of surviving once TikTok has moved on to something else.

And yes, seeing a prehistoric shark apparently erupt from a blood-red tank is exactly as ridiculous as it sounds.

That is rather the point.
