Divina De Campo talks AMANDA – The Night Before Me

Divina De Campo joined GlitterBeam’s Steve via Zoom to talk about the next major chapter in a career that has taken them from television and drag to award-winning musical theatre: the London premiere of AMANDA – The Night Before Me.

Known for an extraordinary four-octave vocal range and unmistakable stage presence, Divina has spent recent years building an increasingly impressive theatre career.

Their credits include Mary Sunshine in the UK tour of Chicago, Sheldon J. Plankton in The SpongeBob Musical, The Amazing Karnak in Ride the Cyclone and, perhaps most notably, the title role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Divina’s performance as Hedwig earned them Best Performance in a Musical at the 2022 UK Theatre Awards.

Now comes a very different challenge.

Becoming Amanda

AMANDA – The Night Before Me is an intimate solo musical exploring identity, love, acceptance and the courage it can take to become yourself.

The story centres on Amanda at a pivotal moment in her life. As she prepares for gender-affirming surgery, her story unfolds through memories of the people and experiences that have shaped her.

But Divina is not simply playing Amanda.

Across the production, they bring to life fourteen different characters and voices from Amanda’s world, including family, friends, lovers and the people whose influence continues to live within her.

It makes AMANDA both an intensely personal story and a formidable performance challenge, with one performer carrying an entire musical through its humour, pain, music and moments of hope.

From Europe to London

The musical was created by Belgian writer and composer Rory Six and grew from conversations with his trans friend Sophie Giller.

Originally performed in German as Ein wenig Farbe, the work developed a following through productions in Austria and Germany. Its new English-language version has been adapted by Charles Hart, the acclaimed lyricist whose work includes The Phantom of the Opera.

Divina becomes the first non-binary performer to take on Amanda in this English-language production.

The London premiere takes place at The Bridge House Theatre in Penge, an intimate 50-seat venue that places the audience remarkably close to the performance.

The production runs from 22 September until 10 October 2026.
