Sienna Spiro Wins Best New Artist at 2026 MTV VMAs After Breakout UK Number One

Sienna Spiro has won Best New Artist at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, completing an extraordinary September for the 20-year-old British singer-songwriter.

Spiro collected the award at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday night after beating a field that included Bella Kay, CORTIS, Magnus Ferrell, Malcolm Todd, Myles Smith and Stella Lefty.

The win came only weeks after “Great Expectation” became her first UK Number One single, making her one of the fastest-rising British pop artists of 2026.

From London to the VMAs

Spiro arrived at the ceremony as a first-time VMA nominee, but she did considerably more than simply attend.

She also made her debut as a performer on the awards show, singing “Great Expectation” during the ceremony before later being announced as Best New Artist.

CBS and MTV had already identified her as one of the evening’s emerging performers, noting that her music had surpassed one billion global streams ahead of the event.

The Best New Artist category remained open for fan voting into the live show, making Spiro’s eventual win one of the final audience-decided results of the night.

Great Expectation changed everything

The VMA comes during a particularly strong period at home.

According to Official Charts’ Sienna Spiro artist profile, “Great Expectation” reached Number One on the UK Singles Chart earlier this month.

That made Spiro the youngest British female artist to score a UK Number One single in 12 years.

It was not her first taste of viral success.

Her earlier song “Die On This Hill” helped introduce her to a much larger audience after spreading online, while subsequent releases steadily built an audience beyond social media.

What makes the current moment different is that those online beginnings are now translating into conventional chart success, sold-out live dates and major international awards recognition.

Who is Sienna Spiro?

Spiro is a London-born singer-songwriter who studied at East London Arts and Music before beginning her recording career.

She released debut single “Need Me” in 2024, followed by “Maybe”, before breaking through more widely with “Die On This Hill”.

Her debut EP Sink Now, Swim Later followed, while her first full album, Visitor, arrived during her rapid rise in 2026.

Spiro’s music mixes contemporary pop with soul influences and highly prominent vocal performances, giving her a noticeably different sound from much of the electronic and dance-driven pop currently occupying the charts.

MTV described her ahead of the ceremony as a British singer-songwriter with an “uncompromising vision”, while her appearance at the VMAs gave an international television audience another introduction to her music.

A big night for female artists

Spiro’s win formed part of a VMA ceremony dominated by female performers.

Madonna won Artist of the Year and collected three awards across the night, while Taylor Swift took Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia” and received the inaugural Artist Director Honors.

For Spiro, however, the result is significant for a different reason.

The Best New Artist award arrives while she is still at the beginning of her first major international breakthrough.

Only a few years ago, she was posting music online. This month she has topped the UK chart, performed on the VMAs stage and left Los Angeles carrying her first Moon Person.
