The Great British Bake Off 2026 begins tonight with one of the biggest changes to the tent in years, as Nigella Lawson makes her first appearance as a permanent judge.
Series 17 starts on Channel 4 at 8pm on Tuesday 22 September, with Lawson joining Paul Hollywood on the judging table while Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding return as hosts.
The new series follows the departure of Dame Prue Leith, who stepped down earlier this year after nine series on the programme.
Lawson now becomes the latest major name to take on one of British television’s most recognisable judging roles.
Nigella Lawson enters the Bake Off tent
Channel 4 confirmed Lawson’s appointment in January, describing her combination of food knowledge, warmth and humour as a natural fit for the programme.
Lawson herself acknowledged at the time that following both Prue Leith and original Bake Off judge Mary Berry was daunting, while also describing joining the series as a major honour.
Filming took place over the summer, with Channel 4 later releasing the first photograph of Lawson alongside Hollywood, Hammond and Fielding after production wrapped.
The broadcaster says Lawson will bring a particular emphasis on flavour to the competition, complementing Hollywood’s more technical approach to judging.
Tonight gives viewers their first chance to see how that new partnership works in practice.
Twelve new bakers begin the competition
The Great British Bake Off 2026 starts with 12 amateur bakers entering the tent.
This year’s contestants come from across the UK and bring a wide range of baking styles, backgrounds and influences.
Among them are 24-year-old marketing graduate Clara from Hertfordshire, political economy student Moyin from Essex and law student Mo from the West Midlands.
Channel 4’s contestant introductions also highlight influences ranging from Portuguese baking and Nigerian flavours to highly decorative cakes and traditional family recipes.
As usual, each week will test the bakers through the Signature, Technical and Showstopper challenges, with one ultimately named Star Baker and another typically leaving the competition.
Tonight’s opening episode begins with Cake Week.
According to advance listings, the bakers face a chocolate stout cake, a coffee and walnut technical challenge and self-portrait showstoppers.
Paul, Alison and Noel return
While the judging partnership is changing, three familiar faces remain at the centre of the programme.
Paul Hollywood continues as the show’s longest-serving judge, while Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding return to guide contestants through the increasingly stressful challenges inside the tent.
The four-person line-up was photographed together for the first time during filming this summer, with Channel 4 presenting Lawson’s arrival as the beginning of a new chapter rather than a reinvention of the programme’s established format.
That distinction matters for a show that has already survived several major changes during its long television life.
Bake Off originally launched on the BBC before moving to Channel 4 in 2017. Presenters, judges and broadcasters have changed, but the central competition inside the tent has remained remarkably consistent.
Bake Off gets a new companion show too
The main programme is not the only part of the Bake Off world changing tonight.
Channel 4 is also launching Second Helpings, a new weekly companion programme hosted by comedian Jon Richardson with Judi Love.
The show will look back at each week’s biggest moments and best bakes, with celebrity guests and additional stories from the judges, presenters and contestants.
Second Helpings begins tonight at 10.35pm, giving viewers another programme immediately after the main competition.
It replaces the familiar idea of a straightforward post-show recap with a new format designed around discussion, behind-the-scenes material and reactions to what happened in the tent.
For Great British Bake Off 2026, however, the biggest change remains at the judging table.
After months of announcements, photographs and trailers, viewers finally get to see Nigella Lawson judging Bake Off for real tonight.
