The Spice Girls mystery announcement is due at 2pm BST today, after the group triggered a new wave of excitement with a deliberately nostalgic teaser pointing directly back to their beginnings.

The teaser was posted through the Spice Girls’ official social channels on 9 September and centres on a copy of The Stage newspaper placed on the staircase made famous by the “Wannabe” video. It gives fans a specific time — Thursday 10 September at 2pm BST — but does not explain exactly what will be announced.

That distinction matters. There is no confirmed Spice Girls reunion tour, no confirmed new single and no confirmed new album at the time of writing. What is confirmed is that the group itself is building towards a Spice Girls mystery announcement today.

The wording in the teaser is designed to echo the band’s origin story. The Stage was the trade publication used in 1994 to advertise for performers for an all-female pop group, a process that eventually brought together Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Halliwell.

This time, the message asks whether fans can sing and dance and whether they are superfans, collectors or music lovers. It also tells them that no sheet music is required, but that they will need a vinyl or CD player.

Those clues have inevitably fuelled speculation that the reveal could involve a physical music release or a 30th anniversary edition of the group’s debut material. However, the Spice Girls have not confirmed that interpretation, and the teaser should not be treated as proof of a specific product or reunion plan.

The timing is significant because 2026 marks 30 years since “Wannabe” turned the Spice Girls into one of the biggest pop acts in the world. Released in 1996, the single became the launch point for a run of huge hits and for the “Girl Power” era that defined the group’s image.

Their debut album Spice followed later that year and included “Wannabe”, “Say You’ll Be There”, “2 Become 1” and “Who Do You Think You Are”. The record established the group as a global pop phenomenon and made all five members instantly recognisable personalities in their own right.

The scale of the group’s UK legacy helps explain why a short teaser can still create this much attention. Official Charts records nine UK Number 1 singles for the Spice Girls — the highest total achieved by any girl group — along with 22 weeks spent at the top of the singles chart. Their first album, Spice, also spent 15 weeks at Number 1 in the UK.

The new teaser also uses the same staircase seen in the “Wannabe” video at the former Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras in London, now the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel. That visual choice makes the anniversary connection impossible to miss, even though the final meaning of the campaign remains under wraps.

There has been persistent discussion around a possible Spice Girls reunion in recent years, but the group’s activity has been intermittent. Their last full tour was in 2019, when four members — Mel B, Mel C, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell — performed without Victoria Beckham. All five last performed together at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Earlier this year, Mel B said the group should mark the 30th anniversary of “Wannabe”, adding to expectations that some form of celebration was being discussed.

Today’s Spice Girls mystery announcement therefore arrives into an audience already primed for something significant. But until the reveal happens, the safest reading is also the simplest one: the Spice Girls have deliberately revisited their origin story, asked fans to be ready with a CD or vinyl player, and set a precise time for the next piece of information.

For a group whose legacy is built partly on turning pop promotion into an event, the campaign is very on-brand. Whether it leads to a reissue, archive release, anniversary project or something bigger should become clear at 2pm BST.
